January 2015 CEO's Message

January 2015 CEO’s Message

The festive and holiday season is now officially over and for most people it is the start of a new year or perhaps new career or job. Learners and students are starting their new academic year.

2014 was a challenging and tumultuous year for many. It was a year of natural disasters, planes disappearing and political strife in many parts of the world.
2015 promises to be a good year despite the Eskom woes. With the oil price down below US$50 per barrel, inflation threats are largely dissipated. Inflation happens to be the biggest destroyer of purchasing power for the middle class and the poor.

At Orion, we have closed 2014 on a high note, with most hotels reporting higher turnovers than the year before. Guest satisfaction was mostly better but some hotels need to focus much more on client service.

Orion Real Estate is well on its way in establishing itself as a REIT (Real Estate Investment Trust) which will exempt it from Capital Gains Tax.
A number of property transactions were concluded which clears the path for a complete overhaul of its business model by becoming more efficient and growing at the same time.

Bakwena Day Spa grew rapidly with the successful opening of this concept at the Sante Spa and the opening of a Bakwena Express at Magoebaskloof Hotel.
For 2015 we have an ambitious expansion strategy for Orion Real Estate which plans to develop and to re-develop a number of properties. Improving accounting and administration efficiencies will also produce healthy gains.

Orion Hotels has set expansion plans. Operational efficiencies and guest satisfaction will receive huge focus. The brand promise “loving to serve our guests better every day” will be taken to the next level. This means that each staff member will be called upon to deliver on this promise.
More Bakwena Day Spas will be opened this year.

Orion Business Solutions will expand its business operations with more corporate clients and the training programs.
Despite external challenges and constraints the Orion Group will grow and prosper this year.

With these exciting prospects I invite and encourage each colleague to take up this challenge and opportunity to be part of the success story.
Each staff member has an important role to play no matter how modest they view their own tasks. A well functioning engine has many parts (big and small). The engine depends on each part to perform smoothly. Even a small malfunctioning part can bring an engine to standstill. Corporations function on the same basis.
I wish each of you a happy and successful 2015.
Let’s all be part of
