About coaching

In general, Orion Business Solutions (OBS) sees coaching as the process of assisting people and teams to unleash potential for superior performance in obtaining results. It involves building on people and team’s strengths, helping them to address developmental needs and challenges in order to achieve their personal best. Coaching requires an emphasis on both task and relationship.

Coaching is outcomes related and solution focused versus the more problem orientated outlook and remedial approach of counseling and therapy. Coaching focuses on a win-win solution to workforce development, offering the scope to help employees reach their full potential while improving the competitiveness and productivity of the business as a whole. With flatter organizational structures employees are required to make large leaps in performance when taking on new roles and the rapid pace of change require them to continually adjust and adapt their skills set.

Why are we here?

There are numerous unique challenges facing coaching for managers in Southern Africa. One challenge is that Southern Africa is a crucible of multi-cultures, made up of a high number of people who are untrained and unskilled within the business environment who need to be developed. In the past, those who have arrived in management positions had spent years being groomed and trained, assimilating the unwritten rules, absorbing the politics, establishing networks of contacts and adjusting to changing power balances.

A new category of manager now emerges. One who is often fast-tracked and unschooled in the unspoken, unwritten codes of conduct, with expectations unmatched with the harsh reality of the business environment.

Orion Business Solutions realized these gaps and developed competitive life skills, business and executive coaching interventions, many of them team based, in addressing these required competencies.

Life Skills coaching

Life skills coaching have evolved into an individual relationship between a coach and a coachee to bring about life changing transformational experiences. Life skills coaching is about clarifying values and visions, and setting goals and new actions so that an individual may lead a more satisfying, successful and significant life. Some examples of life skills coaching include: partnership coaching, retirement coaching, singles coaching, spiritual development coaching, fitness coaching, wellness coaching, career coaching, balanced work/life coaching and quality of life coaching.

Business coaching

Business coaching can be applied to all types of business. It ranges from individual and team coaching in large corporations to owners of small-to medium-sized businesses and other organisations. Business coaching could include: strategic thinking and business planning, business processes, sales and marketing, customer service, interpersonal and communication skills, time management and productivity.

Executive coaching

Executive coaching is a collaborative, individualized relationship between an executive and a Executive Coach. The aims of which are to bring about sustained behavioral change and transform the quality of the executive’s working and personal life. Some areas include: leadership development, specific skills coaching, executive planning and problem solving, emotional intelligence and work/life balance.
