In keeping with it’s namesake, the Orion constellation of stars, the Orion Group plans on becoming one of the most easily recognised stars in the Southern African and International Business Galaxy.
Founded in 1991 by C.E.O. Franz Gmeiner, the group’s property assets have grown from an initial eleven-storey office tower in downtown Johannesburg to a property portfolio in excess of R650 million. This has been as a direct result of the expertise of the management and staff. “Our people are the stars in our quest for stellar performance.”
Broadly speaking, the Orion Group consists of five divisions - Orion Real Estate, Orion Hotels and Resorts, Orion Developments, Orion Facilities Management (OFM), and Orion Business Solutions.
The Group now has a JSE listed company Orion Real Estate Ltd, emphasising the need to establish separate and profitable business entities within the framework of Corporate Governance. This poses new challenges for the entire Orion Group.
The Group currently owns 11 hotels. Hotel Devonshire is situated in Braamfontein, next to the Devonshire House where the Orion Group Head Office is located. Other Hotels in the Orion Portfolio include the Orion Safari Lodge- Rustenburg. Orion Mont-Aux Sources- Northern Drakensburg, Orion Promenade – Nelspruit, Orion Wartburg Kwa-Zulu Natal and Orion Piggs Peak Hotel and Casino in Swaziland, Katse Lodge and Mohale Lodge in Lesotho, Coach House & Magoebaskloof near Tzaneen and Selborne Hotels, Spa & Golf Estate in Pennington KwaZulu-Natal.
Within the next five years the Orion Group plans to manage 25 hotels in Southern Africa brought together through acquisitions, Black Economic Empowerment, Joint ventures and Management contracts. These hotels will have the advantage of being well-managed hotels of the highest standards.

It is flexible in the sense that it has at its disposal in-house professionals on a wide range of business management functions such as: Human Capital, Labour Law, Psychological services, Strategy Development and Management Services.
Through extensive networking and partnering across a wide spectrum of business activities, OBS has developed an impressive portfolio of external and private individuals who are partnering in joint ventures. The synergy and interactive nature of this network of professional expertise is utilised as multiple task teams, headed by a professional and experienced executive.
