Coaching line management from a CEO perspective
Dr Jeanette Maritz, Franz Gmeiner
and the Orion Coaches
Coaching is the process of assisting people and teams to unleash
superior performance. It involves drawing out individual and team
strengths; assisting in managing barriers and limitations in order
to achieve results. Coaching requires an emphasis on both relationship
and task.
The popular perception that healthy relationships and profit are
mutually exclusive, has faded. Relationships are increasingly seen
as essential to long-term business success.
Corporate vision aligned with personal vision motivates superior
work performance. The coach is expected to drive this initiative
as part of the individual and team coaching process.
The coach has to extensively address the values of the organisation
and those of the line manager.
Goals should be strategic in terms of the company’s mission
and should contribute to the business drivers. Individual and organisations’
goals must be aligned.
A goal is a short-term vision with a deadline. Goals have to be set
in a ‘SMART’ format.
S Specific – fuzzy goals lead to vague and half-hearted attempts
to reach them
M Measurable – progress needs to be assessable
A Attainable – the goal must be possible to reach
R Realistic – the goal must be achievable
T Time frame – set an appropriate deadline.
Goal setting for line managers must include reporting to the coach
and his superior.
